A Brief Discussion on the Origin of EVP Messages

There is no consensus as to where the EVP messages are coming from or how best to receive them.  This is not an exact science.

This section includes information contributed by AA-EVP members explaining the equipment and techniques that have worked for them.  Some of the articles include theories and thoughts about why these techniques might work.  The Examples section provides examples that have been collected using these techniques.

AA-EVP members are asked to submit information about recording techniques so that their experience may be passed on to others.  In this way, we hope to help other members improve their experimental results.  The general public is also invited to try some of these techniques.  The messages are there.  Anyone can learn to access them.

How EVP Works

Anything that is capable of recording information appears to be suitable for EVP. The typical EVP recording setup includes:

• Almost any device that will record information.

• Audio recorders that can be easily rewound so that small segments of the recording can be easily played, time and again.

• Reel-to-reel audio recorders are popular because it is easy to reverse the tape to listen to the reverse side. Cassette recorders work well.

• Recording directly into a computer using a program such as Audition to form a *.wav file works well.  This is rapidly becoming the most popular approach for EVP.

• An audible sound source as described below.

• A sensitive microphone.

• A set of headphones.

• A person--identified as an "experimenter" in this text. This person is part of the EVP recording circuit.

Other energy sources are often experimented with. For instance, the presence of quartz crystals have been said to improve message quality, and some researcher have tried bathing the recording area in ultraviolet light energy.  (Caution should be used here.  UV exposure is known to cause heath problems.)

The usual recording procedure is:

• The researcher may prepare for the recording session with a brief period of meditation or prayer. (Some experimenters use this practice because it is thought to help focus energy for recording.  They feel the entities may need this energy to impress messages on recording media.)

• A question may be asked, or in some way, the desire for communication is expressed.

• The audio recorder is turned to record as the question is being expressed or just after. It is interesting that the experimenter's voice may sometimes be remodulated with an EVP message.

• The experimenter does not speak for a moment so that the entity may communicate.

• There may be other questions and periods of quiet in the same recording session.

However the recording is made, short recordings of two minutes or less are advised because every item of sound must be scrutinized for possible messages.  Messages have been discovered on the reverse side of the audio track as well.  An inexperienced EVP experimenter may detect sound modulation on the tape where there should be none, but not recognize them as voices. However, as experience grows, the experimenter will come to recognize voices and words. It seems that the ear must be trained to listen. Communication across the veil is no simple matter and it may take a while for the messages to come through more clearly.

Note that the experimenter does not usually hear messages during the recording session, although some do.  EVP messages are usually just a few words in length and are quickly spoken.  Also, some experimenters have not received recognizable messages until after many recording sessions.  It is suggested that, in the beginning, setting a schedule and recording at the same time each day may improve your chances of getting results.

Why it Works

It is not clear exactly why it is possible to record nonphysical messages. What is stated below is theory and not necessarily what experienced experimenters believe to be true. What appears to be clear is that EVP requires abundant energy that is nonphysical in nature. This energy is sometimes known as etheric energy or spiritual energy, depending on your worldview.

Abundant physical energy is also important for EVP. For instance, experimenters often introduce other sounds into the room during recording sessions. As an example, white noise generated by a fan, running water or electronic noise generators works well. It is important that the sound source does not contain recognizable words that might be mistaken for EVP messages.

It appears that nonphysical entities use their intention to direct etheric energy to change physical, audible energy. For instance, white noise will appear on audio tape as it was recorded through a microphone, but with occasional and obvious segments of remodulation that convey intelligible voices. The entity causes available sound to be remodulated into their words. These words are sometimes in the recognizable voices of the deceased person who is believed to be originating the message.

In a similar way, images have been captured into computers using the following equipment arranged in a circuit:

• A television set that is turned on but not tuned into a station, or a computer monitor with a video capture program operating.

• A video camera that is trained on the "snowy" television screen or computer monitor.

• A video card in a computer that is connected to the video camera.

• If you are using the computer monitor, an image editing program in the computer that permits frame-by-frame review of the video recording will be required.

Similar to the broad-spectrum noise in audio recording, the physical energy used in video recording is either the screen noise of a television set or the feedback noise that results from the video camera picking up its output. Ambient light energy may also be important.

• It is possible to record messages in any recording circumstance. In fact, you may have recorded messages in the past and mistaken them for noise.

• In the past, the perfect recording setup has been designed and successfully tested by its developer. Yet, this setup was no better than any other when tested by other experienced experimenters. The experimenter is part of the circuit and what works for a particular person may be unique to that person.

• It is possible for people to receive messages on any electronic device, even on a telephone answering machine.

• There appears to be a group of nonphysical entities who are trying to perfect communications with the physical world.
